Su Qi was born in 1979 in Xia Men, in the Fu Jian province of China. At age 6 she started her musical education as a violinist. In 1998, she received a degree in violin performance at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music.

That same year she entered the Beijing Music Academy to study violin making under the guidance of Master Zheng Quan and received a diploma in violin making in 2002.

Also in 2002, she entered the International School of Violin Making in Cremona, Italy under the guidance of Masters Daniele Scolari and Luigi Aromatico. She received her diploma in violin making in 2006. She did an apprenticeship in the workshop of Master Francesco Bissolotti and sons (Marco Vinicio and Vincenzo Bissolotti), one of the most important workshops in Cremona. Under the guidance of Master Bissolotti and his sons she perfected her technique and refined her artistic skills. She continues to work with them.

In 2009 she participated in a specialization course in restoration and varnish retouch taught by Master Andrea Ortona. Later that year, she attended a course in instrument set up and restoration taught by Master Carlos Arcieri.

Competition and prizes:
  • 2008: First prize (gold medal) in the cello category and second prize (silver medal) in the viola category in the 2nd Pisogne National Competition in Iseo lake, Italy.

  • 2009: 20th place in the viola category in the12th Triennale International Competition of Violin Making in Cremona.

  • 2010: Finalist in 6th place in the viola category in the 1st China International Violin Making Competition.

  • 2010: The second prize (silver medal) in the violin category (professional maker section) in the 4th Pisogne National Competition in Iseo lake, Italy.
